This bike was horrid. It actually tried to harm me. I ended up in the hospital because of it. After not even 10 hours of riding (total), I was riding home one evening and as I was crossing at a light the front wheel locked up or something and I slammed forward. The handle bars twisted and my weight+inertia impacted on the tip of the handlebars right over my heart. I nearly cracked my ribs. Not only will I not buy this bike I won’t buy anything from them ever again. I have to pay over 9 times the bike costs in hospital bills now. As I made a mistake and sent the bike back to amazon without proper photographs. The bike company said they won’t do anything to assist as they can’t prove it was their fault. Don’t buy this bike. As it’s a mountain bike it should be able to take a beating on rugged terrain. But I had only ridden it on the street. no hills, no bumps, not fast and not beating it up at all. Maybe I got a bad one…all I know is if I WAS riding fast and on rugged terrain I probably would not be here to write a review. Was it a fluke and never going to happen again? Maybe…but I am not going to risk my life again.

My husband put it together according to the plans but as we took it out for a spin first it wouldn’t fit on the bike rack on the car, we had to bungy it on. Secondly, I cannot turn the wheel without it rubbing my shoe. I am only 5’4″ so it is not like I am of abnormal stature. I feel I cannot even ride this bike.

Amazon used to be the best deal around. But lately I have found their pricing becomes less competitive than before. Many items they are selling now can be found at equal or cheaper price at the local store. Mongoose Maxim bike is listed at $149 6/12/08 on Amazon but I found the exact same bike on sale for 99.99 at Meijer from 6/12 – 6/18. Meijer regular price for the bike is 129.99.

Overall a good bike….mine WAS fun to ride but one day my friend and i were hitting a ten foot dirt jump and the rear suspension collapsed on the way up the jump which propelled me face first over the handlebars into the dirt. Now u can ride it because the little bar that runs perpendicular to the seat is press so hard against the tire that in cant spin AT ALL. Also the pedals are touching the ground. Maybe a good bike to tool around the neighborhood or some mild mtb with but not for dirt jumping and what not. I have emailed mongoose about spare parts…no reply so far.

It was a decent purchase. I received what i paid for. I had some technical problems when i put it together but nothing that you cannot solve by yourself. But overall, a great value.
